Dow Corning’s Structural Silicone Glazing Made to Withstand Tough Weather - By Dow Corning

Dow Corning high performance building expert to present on topic at upcoming CTBUH World Congress in Shanghai

City governments in China are now requiring more sustainable and reliable bonding materials to be applied to high-rise buildings, and Dow Corning’s advanced silicone materials are proven to improve structural silicone glazing (SSG) design by ensuring facade safety while also meeting aesthetic requirements.

One Dow Corning expert will soon visit China to discuss structural glazing during “Asia Ascending: Age of the Sustainable Skyscraper City,” the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2012 World Congress, which is scheduled for Sept. 19 through 21 at Grand Hyatt Jin Mao in Shanghai. Lawrence Carbary, industry scientist for Dow Corning High Performance Building Solutions, will present “Advanced Structural Silicone Glazing” at 11:15 a.m. Sept. 19 as part of the event’s Material Advances track. Dow Corning also is a Silver Sponsor of the congress.

“Dow Corning has been a global pioneer in structural silicone glazing applications since the 1960s. Compared to traditional materials, our silicone sealants today possess a unique combination of strength, flexibility and weather resistance,” Carbary said. “As we continue innovating, I believe these unique properties will remain critical to structural glazing applications and ensure high performance for high-rise buildings in the face of harsh weather conditions.”

Dow Corning’s advanced structural silicone glazing has undergone vigorous research throughout the last several decades, and the technology has continually demonstrated durability and performance in high-wind zones and hurricane- and typhoon-prone areas, as well as in regions facing extreme temperatures and seismic activities.

Taller buildings continue to be a key trend around the world because of their contribution to the urbanization, energy management and footprint of our cities, as well as because of the symbol they represent and the services they can provide to the population. This trend is bringing more stringent requirements on the design of silicone structurally glazed facades, creating opportunity for new material and optimized design geometry.

For more than 40 years, Dow Corning’s globally renowned SSG design and technical expertise have played a critical part in a number of global landmarks by increasing overall building performance while facilitating creative building facade designs. The most recent example is the Burj Khalifa Tower, the tallest building in the world.

In China, Dow Corning ensures every construction project runs successfully by offering not only cutting-edge technologies, but also a range of services, including blueprint reviews, design calculations for structural and weathersealing joints, project audits, training, and warranties. The most recent example is Dow Corning’s China Business and Technology Center in the Pudong area, where Dow Corning technology and services can be seen in action.

“As a global leader in silicones, we offer a wide range of innovative and integrated silicone solutions for high performance buildings that improve life-cycle optimization, reduce environmental impact and ensure overall user safety,” said Jean-Paul Hautekeer, Global Marketing Director for Dow Corning High Performance Building Solutions. “Through our unique expertise, we are well equipped to continue supporting our customers to succeed in the market and embrace the trend of tall buildings, using the proven experience that we have accumulated throughout the years combined with new product and design solutions.”
