About Assam PWD:

Assam is a state hemmed by the Himalayas, six north eastern states, Bhutan and Bangladesh. It is crises crossed by the mighty Brahmaputra and Barak. Assam Public Works Department (PWD) is the creator of assets for sustainable social development and maintaining the vital supply line of North Eastern India. PWD builds, upgrades, improves and maintains roads, bridges and buildings for the people of Assam. Roads are the vital link in bringing the farm producers close to their markets and play a crucial role in rural development.

The Public Works Department (PWD) in the state of Assam is engaged with the task of construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and buildings infrastructure. To undertake such a mammoth responsibility PWD is spread across the entire state of Assam. The departments provide its services through a complex web of its divisional and circle Offices. It has approximately 85 divisional Offices situated in different parts of the state to handle a diverse project portfolio which include Planned works, non-planned works, externally aided projects like those funded by World Bank and ADB and other multilateral / bilateral funding organizations, central road fund works, calamity relief fund works, flood damage repair works, non-lapsable central pool of resources works, RIDF works funded by NABARD, PMGSY works, NEC (DONER) funded works, National Highway works, Housing and Urban Development funded works, Deposit works, etc. Apart from the original works (planned, non-planned) under the various schemes funded by Governments or other funding agencies, PWD also takes up the roads which are really in bad conditions for major up-gradation works. This is as good as an original work.

In addition PWD takes care of routine maintenance (proactive maintenance) of the roads, based on the availability of the fund. Sometimes PWD also needs to allot some funds to the emergency maintenance of a road due to various reasons like VIP travel, breakdown due to heavy overload of vehicles etc. This type of small repair works comes under the 3054 account head from Assam state budget.
