Availability of quality power at affordable cost has emerged as a critical determinant for the pace of development in India, in the coming years. The National Electricity Plan lays major emphasis on full development of feasible hydroelectric potential in the country. Under the 50,000 MW initiatives of 2003-04, numbers of measures have been adopted by the Government. These projects are expected to yield benefits during the 11th Plan and beyond. To secure the energy needs of an economy growing at more than eight percent per year, the Indian Government has announced the creation of a national grid for gas pipelines, including efforts to build transnational pipelines. To meet the need for networking, international cooperation and international best practices, ASME is launching the ASME India Oil and Gas Pipeline Conference, the first of its kind in India.

The 4-day conference begins on October 15, with tutorial sessions offered by internationally recognized pipeline engineers from around the world. Tutorial sessions will continue on October 16.
