| Description |
The energy scenario continues to
represent a challenge for industrial consumers. Oil and gas prices
remain volatile, even if the current levels are lower than the highs
of the last 12 months. While the expectation is that they may fall
somewhat in the near future, few analysts are ruling out the possibility
of increases.

| Description |
Gold prices have rallied spectacularly
during 2004, 2005 and 2006 on the back of several bullish factors
such as the state of US economy, crude oil price spurt, unabated
demand for jewellery and last but the least, the emergence of new
demand centre in the form of ETF. However, much against these spectacular
price rallies (over 20% in 2005 and 2006), prices have hardly moved
up by about 2% in the first half of 2007. Is it the end of bull
rally in gold or is it the lull before storm?
The launch of Exchange Traded Fund in gold in India has been an
important milestone. As anticipated, the response has been gradual.
Having said thus, a slew of new participants are planning to enter
this space. Would it lead to a reduction in demand for jewellery
in India? Would it dawn a new era of "Gold as financial instruments
of choice for every Indian"?
While Gold ETF is emerging on the horizon, bullion coins and medallions
business is also growing by leaps and bounds. The number of banks
that have taken to this business is a proof of the demand for such
instruments.
Lastly, the most path-breaking development in the recent times
has been the emergence of commodity derivatives markets. MCX has
shown that given the right product-market proposition and the governance
structure, Indian exchanges could deliver world-class solutions
on risk management. Is it time to extend the magic of market to
spot markets also?
The above are some of the issues that are exciting every participant
involved with bullion and jewellery trade. Such issues have multiple
dimensions and ramification, which only experts can clarify and
guide.
Welcome to India International Gold Convention 2007, to explore
the possibilities, to get an in-depth view on the current scenario
and to plan and prepare for future. Needless to mention, networking
with the best in business comes naturally.

India Infrastructure |
| Description |
Mission
! Development of transportation infrastructure in general and
better roads in particular is essential to the maintenance of economic
growth.
! The quality of roads in India, despite recent progress, is still
very poor. Only about 12 per cent of the national highways are four-laned.
Most are heavily congested, poorly maintained and move slowly. The
condition of the state networks is even worse. Only 1 per cent of
the state highways are four-laned and only 22 per cent two-laned.
! The ambitious National Highways Development Programme (NHDP)
has not proceeded according to the original schedule. It has been
hit by delays in project completion, which, in turn, have led to
cost escalations. So far, just over 7,000 km of projects have been
fully completed. We are nowhere close to the 2015 goal of 50,000
km.
! The state road networks carry 60 per cent of the traffic and
account for almost 98 per cent of the total route length. But only
about half-a-dozen states have entities dedicated to road development.
In other states, it is left to the public works departments (PWDs),
which are not always fully equipped to handle the planning or implementation
of modern road systems. Another reason for the poor standards of
state roads is inadequacy of funds. According to Planning Commission
estimates, the funding available for state networks (Rs 80 to Rs
100 billion per year) is just about half of what is required (at
least Rs 160 billion per year)
