Water Resources development & hydro-power generation by constructing dams-small, medium and large, in an efficient holistic manner and preserving environment is the need of the hour.

The Major Objectives of the Association are
	To promote the concept of design,financing, construction, operation etc., of all types of electrical power stations, including as pumped storage plants for meeting peak load demands, with a view to giving a fillip to the use and development of the Electricity Supply Industry and making them environmentally friendly.
	Advancing the science, engineering, design, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and safety of electricity supply industry.
	Fostering socially, environmentally and financially viable electricity supply and associated projects.
	Promoting public awareness of the role of power industry, including dams, transmission network in the beneficial and sustainable development of the nation’s resources.
	To examine the various aspects of power industry, like safety, environmental effects, earthquakes, construction and rehabilitation, concrete foundations etc.
	To act as facilitator for the public and private sector companies, government departments and other governmental and non-governmental agencies to working together for a long range objective in all aspects of planning, development, efficient and cost effective technologies and development of necessary facilities.
	To act as facilitator for development and use of electricity supply resources for power, including irrigation, navigation, pisiculture, agriculture, associated transmission network, communication, electronics etc. and allied technologies and to establish an effective network amongst the users and allied equipment manufacturers consultants, financiers and legislative consultants and other industries, technical and educational institutions and other organization (domestic and international) for exchange of ideas, collection and dissemination of information on all aspects of design construction and utilization of hydro power, and allied structures, for the general benefit of all concerned.
	To facilitate development of institutions/facilities for imparting training in all aspects of power and its associated structures, including planning, designing, construction and commissioning and allied subjects like irrigation, pisiculture, drinking water, navigation, recreation, transmission network for evacuation of power etc.
	To undertake and promote studies and research projects for improvements, renovation and upgradation of power eqipment and associated structures like, dams etc., with a view to help various organizations and consumers to optimize the utilization of the existing facilities.
	To promote clean technologies, undertake environmental impact assessment of the projects and provide technical assistance for maximizing its utilization in the design and construction of power and associated plants.
	To conceptualize plan and promote development and utilization of electrical power and allied subjects.
	To promote and facilitate taking up of research and consultancy projects.
	To promote an effective domestic and international out-reach by establishing contacts and bilateral relations with professional bodies, financial institutions, multilateral organizations like AESIEAP, UNEP, ESKAP, UNDP, UNIDO, the World Bank, ADB, OECF, AIDAB/ AUSTRADE, US AID, ICOLD, IHA, ICID etc. and to represent them and to function on their behalf.
	To establish support, maintain acquire run and to grant aid and other financial assistance to school, colleges, social and educational libraries, reading rooms, hostels boarding houses and other institutions for the use of students and also for general development and advancement of education and diffusion of knowledge amongst the public related to power and allied subjects.
	To sponsor advance studies and applied research & development work in various fields of energy and allied technologies

Convergence or interdependence of developmental activities has become keyword at all levels including international level to evolve strategies for efficient management of available resources. For best management and use of our vulnerable resources essential to sustain life, contribute to over all development and to preserve environment, there is need to have a holistic view of the development.

Water Resources development by constructing dams-small, medium and large, is one of the areas of such activity. For this purpose a society titled 'The Dams Society' has been established and registered with the Registrar of Societies, Delhi, in September 2001.

Promotion of the concept of design and construction of all types and heights of dams to give impetus to the use and development of environment friendly, socially compatible and financially viable water resource projects.

Council of Power Utilities (CPU), an umbrella organization of Power Utilities in India, established in 1983, aims at formulations of solutions of problem besetting the power supply industry through interaction between indigenous utilities and also between utilities of developed and developing countries. In the wake of liberalization, the Council provides an excellent forum for all the players in the power and associate sectors like water resources, water ways etc. to seek solutions and strive for economically and environmentally sustainable development strategies.

The Council has been mainly formed to evolve solutions of the problems connected with the power sector. The important attribute of the Council is that it is an Association of Power Utilities, trying to solve the problems of the Utilities in collaboration with other players in power development business, namely designers, consultants, manufacturers, investors, policy makers and environmentalists.

The Major Objectives of the Council are
	Sharing the experience of the major manufacturer of power plant equipment, engineering consultants, academicians, environmentalists and the leading utilities in the world in the area of Eco-friendly power generation.
	Discussions by way of International conferences at regular intervals regarding technological advancements for conventional and non-conventional power sources in the areas of improved efficiency and environment.
	Developing closer working relationship between experts from manufacturer and Utilities and all others concerned through personal interaction.
	Assessment of problems and formulation of solutions through interchange of ideas in order to strive for economically, socially and environmentally sustainable power development strategies for sustainable power development.
