ETV Dialogue Series
ETV News Network, one of the Largest Private Regional News Television Networks, has initiated a dialogue series to deliberate on issues that could further boost the rapid strides of India into the future and is aimed at crafting a blueprint for the country’s sustainable growth. Apart from informing and entertaining its viewers, ETV News Network has always remained in forefront in educating its viewers through its various award-wining programs.
ETV News Network along with the support of Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Steel organized the ETV Dialogue ‘Unlocking India’s Metals, Mining & Mineral Potential’ on Friday, 19th February, 2016 in Dehradun. ‘ETV Dialogue on Unlocking India’s Metals, Mining & Mineral Potential’ was the second initiative in the Dialogue Series which brought together the leading stakeholders for policy debate to find ways and means of strengthening the country`s metals, mining & mineral sector. The dialogue was positioned as a thought leadership platform and focused on the challenges before India's Metals, Mining & Mineral sector and highlight opportunities in these sectors.
The Mining Dialogue was supported by major players in the sector and NMDC was the presenting sponsor. It was supported by NALCO and organized in association with SAIL, MOIL, MSTC, RINL, MECL & Hindustan Copper Limited. India Core was the knowledge partner for the series.
Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Hon’ble Union Minister of Steel & Mines, was the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address, Shri Tomar mentioned that there are significant opportunities in the metal, mining and mineral sector despite challenges. The minister congratulated the officials of Ministry of Mines for the bumper success of non-coal mining lease auction done for the first time in country in Chhattisgarh and for successfully handing over large number of exploration reports to states. He stated that the State Government will get additional amount of Rs 4413 crore over the life of lease in addition to royalty, district mineral foundation (DMF), national mineral exploration trust (NMET) contribution. The minister recalled that there was lot of criticism regarding the earlier mining allocation process wherein mines were handed out to miners on discretionary basis by the state governments and the process lacked transparency. He mentioned that the money generated from mining will be used for the welfare of common man.
He stated that a Rs 200-crore corpus has been created to fund the activities of Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI) for promoting research in iron and steel sectors and turn the country into a metallurgical hub and for producing good quality steel in the country.
The Guest of Honor- Shri Harish Rawat, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand effusively praised ETV for organising the dialogue series in the state of Uttarakhand. The Chief Minister commented that small states get a voice because of such platforms. The Chief Minister demanded that States should be made equal stakeholders in the mining sector and suggested that mining should be carried out in a scientific manner. He cautioned against the threat of cheaper metals and dumping from China in the face of the collapse in demand in other parts of the world and India should remain guarded to have higher GDP growth. He made an impassioned plea that Uttarakhand should be given its due as its forest wealth and water from its rivers contributed immensely in enriching the environment. He complained that vested interests were trying to derail Uttarakhand’s development by putting road blocks in the garb of environment protection. He stated that local wisdom should be given due consideration while making plans for tackling issues like Ganga rejuvenation, Yamuna rejuvenation or development of hydel electricity.
The Special Guest Shri Ranjeet Rawat, Industrial Advisor to Uttarakhand Chief Minister, mentioned that positive news should be highlighted rather than sensationalism by the media. He lamented the trend amongst some media channels of not giving adequate prominence to constructive news.
The Special Guest Shri Rakesh Sharma, Principal Chief Secretary to Uttarakhand Chief Minister, said that the minor minerals are all under the jurisdiction of forest and environment department and the mining department does not have much control over the mineral wealth of the state. He earnestly requested Shri Tomar to correct this anomaly at the GOI level by amending the policy framework.
Earlier during his opening remarks, Shri Jagdeesh Chandra, Head, ETV News Network welcomed the steel and mining minister and other dignitaries and stated that the focus of today's dialogue would be achievements in metal and mining sector. He mentioned that there are many challenges confronting the steel and mines ministry. He informed that ETV has become the voice of common people in 20 states and has a well-defined editorial policy where only negativity is not being highlighted but positive aspects are also given prime importance.
ETV News Network also facilitated & recognized eminent personalities for outstanding contribution and demonstrated excellence in the metal and mining sector- Dr Gopal Dhawan, Chairman & Managing Director, Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd for successfully handing over large number of exploration reports to states and Shri S K Tripathi, CMD, MSTC Ltd for providing the e-auction platform for forward auction of both coal blocks and non-coal minerals.
Shri Asheet Kunal, Editor (National), ETV News Network during his vote of thanks at the end of the inaugural session mentioned that the dialogue is being telecasted across 16 states to millions of viewers.
In the panel discussion on ‘Unlocking India’s Metals, Mining & Mineral Potential- Achievements, Challenges and Opportunities Ahead’, the panelist deliberated at length on the issues facing the sector and gave an outlook of the challenges facing the industry and the policy initiatives undertaken to iron out these issues and further policy interventions required. Shri Amit Bhanot, Senior Journalist gave session opening remarks & expertly moderated the discussion which focused on issues like the state of Indian metals and mining industry and what are the areas that need attention for unlocking India's metals and mining potential.
The eminent panelists in this session included Shri Rakesh Sharma, Chief Principal Secretary, Uttarakhand; Shri Harbans Singh, Director General, Geological Survey of India; Dr Gopal Dhawan, Chairman & Managing Director, Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd (MECL); Shri G P Kundargi, Chairman & Managing Director, MOIL limited; Shri S K Tripathi, CMD, MSTC Ltd; Shri B. Akala, Former CMD, CCL and CMPDI of Coal India Ltd, presently Secretary General, Indian Coal Forum and Member, Int. Org. Committee of the World Mining Congress and Shri Sunil Yadav, Vice President– Mining, Metso India.
The event was a resounding success with best possible representation and overwhelming participation from the various stakeholders.
The concluding remarks and the vote of thanks was given by Shri Jaideep Dhagat, Business Head- Government & Events (Pan India), ETV News Network. Jaideep Dhagat spoke about the successful conclusion of the first part of the dialogue series and hoped to carry forward this initiative with a focus on the other important sectors of the Indian economy.
