Following SMM Istanbul, this is the second overseas event of SMM, the world's leading trade fair
for the international ship building industry. It features more than 100 exhibitors from all parts of the
world, including 50% Indian shipyards and marine equipment suppliers, presenting the latest
technologies and products for shipbuilding and the maritime equipment industry.
The accompanying conference takes a forward looking approach, with the slogan "Maritime India – The Path Ahead". The Indian Minister of Shipping expects lively exchange of ideas and
experience there by the representatives from government organisations and company
management, investors, bankers, project managers and project developers. Good business
prospects are expected specifically for the international maritime equipment supply business,
according to Hauke Schlegel, Executive Director of the Shipbuilding and Offshore Supply Section
of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). He believes that "the international ship building
and offshore industry has a new base at SMM India to develop the enormous potential of the
Indian maritime market. India is following a clear course for development of the maritime sector to
international standards. And the fastest way for Indian industry to move ahead is by means of

The conference session on "India's Shipbuilding – Opportunities, Challenges & Imperatives" will be
addressed by Matthew Cuerdon, Vice President Business Development of AVEVA NET Solutions
Ltd. from the United Kingdom, taking up the question of partnerships and discussing the
opportunities arising from collaboration with shared use of a digital information hub.
International equipment suppliers present their products and services in concentrated form at the
session on "Maritime Technology & Equipment". For example Georg E. Scheuing from the German
engine builder MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH presents advanced propulsion systems for offshore
supply vessels. Capt. Tarun K. Mathur of Transas Marine Pacific, Singapore, discusses the
reliability of navigation systems and implementation of this technology on ships.
Dr. A.A. Vasilyev
of the Russian Shipbuilding & Shiprepair Technology Centre presents a concept for modernisation
of shipyards, specifically focusing on modular installations and naval vessels. The capabilities of a
floating infrastructure for improvement of container handling in Indian ports are presented by
Dr. Ulrich Malchow, Managing Director Port Feeder Barge from Germany. New technologies for
underwater repair are presented by Rene Huybregts from Hydrex NV, a Belgian company.
The conference includes a session dedicated to "Marine Finance", with keynote speaker Tobias
König, Managing Partner of the Hamburg based issuing house König & Cie. The impact of the
international financial and economic crisis on ship financing is discussed by Dr. Jürgen Monzel of
International Transport Finance Consultant, Germany; Vishal Sharma, Managing Director and CEO
of Tuscan Ventures Pvt. Ltd., India; and Raymond J. Ellis, Vice President and Manager of EXIM(Export/Import Bank), USA.
